Regional Supervisor Training
One of the most important elements in the success of an employee assistance program is the training of supervisors to make referrals. When properly trained to understand concepts and operations of the employee assistance program, supervisors can greatly enhance the effectiveness and utilization of the program.
Public Safety EAP’s Supervisor Training meets accreditation requirements for supervisor education in learning how to identify subordinates who may be exhibiting stress in the workplace and connecting those individuals to appropriate resources for help. We encourage Union Presidents be invited as well so they can learn more about the benefits of EAP and the Supervisory Referral Process.
Public Safety EAP is also available to provide this training on-site for any department. Contact Tami Hodges or Col. (Ret.) Bob Mullaly to arrange. Contact information on the attached flyer.
The curriculum includes such topics as:
- Performance Evaluation and Documentation
- Identification of Impaired Employees
- Drug and Alcohol Awareness
- Making a Supervisory Referral
- Managing a Problem Situation
- Signs and Symptoms of: Stress, Burnout, Depression
- Critical Incident Stress Management

- Full Array of PSEAP Benefits Available
The Supervisor Training Program is a three hour presentation and includes a training manual, handouts and video presentations. Train the Trainer Packages will be available to take back to the department to be used for future in-service training.

Public Safety Officers Lobby for Collective Bargaining Bill

Law enforcement leaders from across the country are undertaking a strong lobby in the U.S. Congress for passage of H.R. 980, the Public Safety Employer-Employee Cooperation Act, which would set minimum collective bargaining rights for public safety officers.
Authored by U.S. Rep. Dale Kildee (D-Mich.), the legislation would require all 50 states to provide a mechanism for collective bargaining rights for all police, firefighters, correctional officers and EMTs.
“Over the years, Congress has expanded the scope of these laws to cover private-sector employees, nonprofit association employees, transportation workers, federal government employees, and most recently, congressional employees,” said President McEntee. “The only major category of workers not covered by federal laws is state and local government employees like public safety officers.”
To map out a plan to win passage of this measure, several AFSCME public safety members met in Washington, D.C., recently. “Given the nature of what we do, we deserve basic workplace protections,” says Council 15 Exec. Dir. Jim Howell who chairs the initiative. “We risk our lives every day because we care deeply about our jobs.”
